The Savonlinna Music and Dance Institute offers tuition in music and dance according to the national guidelines issued by the Finnish National Board of Education. The goal of the tuition is to support children and adolescents in their personal development, lay a foundation for a lifelong interest in the arts and provide stepping stones towards a professional study of music or dance.
The Savonlinna Music and Dance Institute is located in the heart of Savonlinna. Tuition is also given in Kerimäki, Punkaharju, Sulkava and at nurseries and schools of the region.
The total number of pupils at the Savonlinna Music and Dance Institute is approximately 820, of which 520 study music and 300 dance.
Music
The Savonlinna Music and Dance Institute offers tuition on following instruments and voice: accordion, bassoon, cello, clarinet, double bass, electric bass, electric guitar, euphonium, flute, French horn, guitar, harpsichord, oboe, organ, percussionnstruments, piano, saxophone, trombone, trumpet, tuba, viola, viola da gamba and violin. If a child finds it difficult to decide, which instrument to play, there is a year-long preparatory class for trying out different instruments.
Besides classical music, pupils can also explore other genres such as rock, pop, jazz or folk music. Music theory, ear training and different ensembles from duos to orchestras are an integral part of the studies.
Music Classes for Young Children
At the “Playschool” music classes children sing, dance, play and learn together. Music benefits the development of a child on many levels. There are classes for babies (from three months old onwards), toddlers and preschoolers. Until the age of three, children are accompanied by an adult during classes.
A Music and Dance Institute for Everyone
The tuition at the Savonlinna Music and Dance Institute is publicly subsidized and it follows a national curriculum. If one wishes to explore music without the framework of a curriculum, it is possible to purchase private lessons at a competitive price. The Savonlinna Music and Dance Institute is open to all people of all ages.
Dance
Dance studies provide the students with knowledge, understanding and technical skills about dance as an artform. Students can choose to study classical ballet, contemporary dance, jazzshow dance or different street styles. There are also dance classes for young children and preschoolers.
